3 Costly Mistakes People Make During A Divorce

Going through a divorce can be very hard emotionally. Many people make emotional decisions during a divorce that might not be the best thing for them legally. This is why it is important that if you are considering a divorce that you avoid the following mistakes.

1. Do Not Abandon Your House

One of the worst things you can do is leave the house before you are legally separated. Once you leave the house, you no longer have possession of it. This means that your spouse can change the locks, box up your things and not let you on the property. This might be the case until the divorce is final and there is a legal order for you to get back into the house.

Even though you might be frustrated with your spouse, try to stay in the house until you can get a legal separation. This will allow you to still have claim over your things. If you have to leave the property for your safety, then gather up anything that you need to have and take it with you.

2. Do Not Leave Your Kids

If you are fighting for custody of your children, you need to show that you are responsible and constant. If you walked out on your children and left them for a period of time, you will have a harder time getting primary or joint custody of the children. This is because the judge will see this as irresponsible and see your spouse as more committed to the children.

Thus, if you have to leave the house, or leave your spouse, take your children with you. Do not leave them at the house when you leave. Otherwise you might forfeit your ability to get primary or joint custody.

3. Don't Put Off Talking To A Lawyer

The moment you decide you want a divorce you need to talk to a divorce lawyer like those at Winstein, Kavensky & Cunningham, LLC. or others. They will help you know what you need to do to protect yourself and you finances during a divorce. Many people wait too long and end up making costly mistakes, like those mentioned above.

For this reason, consult an attorney as soon as possible. Just because you consulted an attorney doesn't mean that you have to file for a divorce. You can still change your mind.  However, the lawyer will let you know your options and make sure that you are well taken care of legally.

By avoiding these mistakes you can help your divorce to go smoother and protect yourself.
